What is an AED?

An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the life threatening cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation and pulseless ventricular tachycardia and is able to treat them through defibrillation, the application of electricity which stops the arrhythmia, allowing the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm.

It sounds really complicated but it's really not........

Ventricular Fibrillation (VF)

Ventricular fibrillation (V-fib or VF) is when the heart quivers instead of pumping due to disorganized electrical activity in the ventricles. It is a type of cardiac arrhythmia. Ventricular fibrillation results in cardiac arrest with loss of consciousness and no pulse.

 

Defibrillation is the delivery of lifesaving electrical energy to the heart during an abnormal rhythm or very rapid erratic beating of the heart known as Ventricular Fibrillation (VF).

Automatic external defibrillators, or AEDs, are small computerized devices that analyze heart rhythms and provide the shock needed for defibrillation. Through electrodes placed on a patient’s chest a processor inside the AED analyzes the victim’s heart.

 

The machine will not shock unless it is necessary; AEDs are designed to shock only when VF, a common cause of cardiac arrest, is detected.

Who can use an AED?

Basically anyone can use them, they have been designed to be idiot proof and you simply switch it on and follow the verbal instructions given by the AED itself.

This is confirmed due to the fact there are public access defibrillators all over the UK now and they are supplied for anyone to use, trained or untrained, so they have to easy to use. (see our public access defib blog)

The machine will not produce a shock unless it needs to.
